YD does Galapagos……..via Huddersfield.. March 12, 2006

Wasn’t diving this weekend as Saturday was the long awaited first Gos Crew 2007 social.  An opportunity to meet up, have some food and chat about the upcoming gig, sorry opportunity of a lifetime perhaps!!!   Due to my inability to read emails correctly we arrived an hour late.  I was under the very false impression that it was meet at 6.30 for 7pm type of thing, when in fact it was meet at 5.30 for 6  DOH!!! So at 6pm we get a call from Gary, where are you and whatcha want to eat?   So indian it is and the menu is chosen.  We arrive spot on 6.30pm, which would have been great planning!!!  BTW we were coming down from Lisa’s parents in Scotland.  Jules ordered the food and we were all introduced to those that we didn’t know.  Having been on dive trips with Lou, Caroline, Fiona, Jules, Kathy & Gary before, I knew most people there, having not met only Jenny & John before, whom it was a pleasure to finally meet.  Lisa had spoken to and met some of group before but it was her first opportunity to really chat and get to know people.

The evening was a good chance to talk about some of the plans, especially the inevitable debate about the flights.   JUST TO REMIND THOSE INVOLVED.  Lisa and I will provide reconnaissence when we travel to the US in May….. :)  but also look at extensions to the trip.

The proposed extensions to the Inca trail and other places around Ecuador look fascinating and really enjoyable.  Whilst we would love to be adding these onto the trip, for us the diving will be the main attraction and so will take priority, we feel it would be unfair on our children to be aware an extra 10 days on top.

We also had the chance to go through the itineary a little and watch Gary & Kathy’s DVD from their recent trip to the Maldives and it just wets the appetite for seeing some of the wonders of the seas.   Having not really experienced blue water diving yet for me it is a very tempting proposition and for Lisa what diving is all about.

So it was a fabulous evening. Took us a bit of a while to get back as the snows came in as we got to Carlisle.  It had been snowing from Chorley but when we hit the border, we faced a wall of snow.  Within a mile or two none of the lanes of the motorway were visible, it was only when we caught up to a truck that we made any steady safe progress.  Things got a little tense towards Junction 14 of the M74 at Beattock and Moffat as the motorway climbs steeply but we followed a convoy of three trucks up it at snails pace and thankfully didn’t slip down.  We did hear later that the motorway was closed when it got light.  The last 10 miles from the motorway to Lisa’s parents was slow and labourous and we just made it through Coulter eventually arriving back at about 5.30 am.  A long trip but it was a lot of fun.

[…] You may have heard on the news that the South West of Scotland suffered a bit of a snow storm last night well Lisa and I were in the middle of it travelling back from Huddersfield to Lisa’s parents in Biggar.  We had been down to a visit some friends who we are going to the Galapagos Islands with next year.  More details of that are in the diving blog.   […]
